From the latest NRA-ILA update:
As the issue of Mexican violence continues to boil over, it has become clear that for many anti-gun politicians, the war on drugs and the war on gun owners’ rights are the same thing.
I wish the NRA would take the next logical step and get on board with the rather obvious reality that if there wasn’t a war on (some) drugs, there’d be way less of a perceived need for a war on our gun rights. The only reason the gun grabbers can even hang on to the shrinking toe hold they cling to is the “urban violence is caused by lax gun laws” canard; enough well meaning but addled urban liberals just shrug and say “eh…yeah I guess so” and assume that the drug war wouldn’t be violent if private gun ownership was tightly restricted–which is, after all, why the drug war in Mexico isn’t violent. Er…whoops.
Urban violence is a function of the drug war and the socioeconomic conditions endemic in drug culture. Period.
Gun related violence spiked radically in this country exactly when the war on (some) drugs got into full swing 40+ years ago. You’d have to be a real buffoon to miss the crystal clear implication. Get rid of the ridiculous drug prohibitionism that harms more than it helps, and our gun rights would be far more secure than they’ve been at any time since the 2A was penned.
